Railway System of Electrical Control

  • Apparatus for remote control of electrical equipment in the switching stations, known as SCADA, is located in Electrical Control Rooms.
  • Each Electrical Control Room is continuously staffed by an Electrical Control Operator (s), who has control of the power supply to the electric traction system, and who is responsible for all switching operations and isolations of electrical equipment thereon.

Electric train and Panto

Pantograph

  • A device mounted on insulators and fixed to the roof of an electric traction unit.
  • Contains carbon strips
  • When raised and presses against underside of contact wire, electricity is collected from the OLE

Electric train

  • An electrically powered train which has a pantograph on the traction unit through which electric current is collected from the OLE

Emergency Feeding arrangements

  • If the supply to a feeder station fails or a fault develops in a feeder station, power to the catenaries is maintained by extending the feed to the stations on either side by closing the appropriate bus section circuit switches in the boundary t.s.c.s.

Emergency Isolation

  • Emergency Isolation is “Disconnection of overhead line equipment initiated by Electrical Control Operator in circumstances when it is essential to switch off electricity supply immediately to remove danger to persons from live overhead line equipment”

  • Effected by ECO switching off electricity supply from all lines between Neutral sections, or between Neutral section and end of electrified line
